Admission Procedures

Prospective candidates can receive further information and application materials by calling the Institute office at 973-762-1553. As part of the admissions process, transcripts of graduate education and any prior institute training will be required, along with two letters of recommendation by people familiar with the applicant's clinical work. A fee of $40.00 must accompany the application. The prospective candidate will also be asked to schedule at least one interview with a member of IPPNJ who practices in his or her geographical area (if possible). At this meeting, the interviewing analyst will explore with the applicant the question of the appropriateness of analytic training for him or her, and will respond to any questions the interviewee wishes to raise.

At the time of the admissions interview, the applicant should bring up any concerns about possible course waiver(s) or acceptance with advanced standing. If the applying candidate submits evidence of having passed a course substantially equivalent to an IPPNJ course at another psychoanalytic institute, or if he or she can provide syllabi or course descriptions showing that such material has been covered already (e.g., in a psychoanalytic graduate school course, private seminar or agency training program), a course waiver may be obtained. If the Institute and/or the applicant is uncertain about the appropriateness or extent of a requested waiver, the interviewer may recommend that the candidate present a case to a three-person committee of IPPNJ analysts. This group will then recommend whether and how much advanced placement is reasonable under the circumstances.

Admission to IPPNJ may be limited by the availability of space in classes and by the interviewing analyst's judgment of the applicant's personal qualifications for psychoanalytic training. IPPNJ reserves the right to terminate the training program of any student who, in the judgment of the Training Committee and with approval from the Board of Trustees, has demonstrated either personal or academic inability to do competent, ethical, and disciplined psychoanalytic work. Termination is entirely within the purview of the Institute, and it will not be liable or prejudiced by any such action it may take, such being in the best interests of IPPNJ, its candidates, and the general welfare of the mental health professions and the clients they serve.

In its admissions policies IPPNJ does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, national or ethnic origin, sexual preference, religious background or beliefs, or physical disability (except for certain conditions, such as deafness, which would make employment as a psychoanalyst impossible).
